The nation is gearing up for the chance to elect a new president come May 2010. With all the brouhaha on the Comelec's automated election system (AES) bidding (which, incidentally, is the wrong way of moving forward) and the politicians pumping radio and TV with their campaign propaganda even if they refuse to admit it, one can only wonder if there is still hope for the country. What do you think? Before you answer this, let me give you what I THINK about the entire scenario.
1. Politicians are banking on the uneducated masses to win the election. They feed them with false information via the radio and TV. This is the reason why TV/Radio personalities, e.g. actors, sportsmen, etc., are winning the elections! Don't get me wrong but the uneducated masses are to blame for the country's mess -- for electing officials who know nothing but to get rich! Of course, this does not get those politicians off the hook - may these corrupt politicians burn in hell!
2. One may wonder if the dismal state of the nation's education is a deliberate plan by the politicians. Imagine if a majority of the country's voting population graduated from high school, then the politicians will be hard pressed in feeding them with promises during election time. How can they win if the masses start to be critical of their plans, right?
Deliberate plan? Most likely. Take the case of Dept. of Finance issuing taxes for imported books - which are, to start with, should be tax exempt. This is a simple way of preventing the Filipinos from accessing these resources. Think of Fr. Damaso during the Spanish era and you know what it means. Yes, we are going back to these times when the government dictates what you can and cannot read!
What is next? Have you heard of the NTC's attempt to silence the local content creators by imposing a license fee? Well, they thought they can get away with it. Just imagine, if they can do this - then what happens to us?
3. The educated, unfortunately, just do not care! They'd rather leave it to the masses to exercise their right to vote and when the country is in deep shit, they complain! Yes, they complain so loud that you think they will do something about it. Unfortunately, that is all they do - COMPLAIN! NO ACTION!
So - you think there is a chance for this country? I believe there is -- short of barring the uneducated from voting without thinking, the educated must all go out and intelligently choose their candidate!
----
Just a thought, why can't the lawmakers unselfishly enact a law barring all elected officials (including those who served the government before) from running for office this 2010 - we all have seen how they work and nothing improved? Well, because THEY ARE ALL SELFISH!

I agree. Though I'm starting to believe that we have been doomed from the start.
